Packing for glamping with kids

When it comes to packing for a glamping holiday with your kids you should remind yourself that you’re not just going camping. You won’t be staying in an ordinary tent or caravan, but instead in one of our canvas-wrapped three bedroom homes from home. All our tents come with fully made beds and bed linen, as well as kitchens equipped with butane hobs, wood burning stoves and tableware. As well as your fine selves and your children, you simply need to bring things to make your stay even more fun and luxurious like:

  • Tin foil. Essential for baking potatoes, bananas and the like in the embers of your firepit.
  • A picnic rug, for enjoying lunch in the fresh air on.

Things to Do on a Family Glamping Holiday

One of the best things about glamping with kids is having the freedom to enjoy the outdoors at your own pace. Go exploring, discover wildlife, play games or simply enjoy some fresh air together.

Depending on where you stay, you may also find books, board games, toys and outdoor equipment available for families to use. And when the day is done, gather around the fire pit, cook something delicious and enjoy an evening beneath the stars.

Campfire cooking for kids

Cooking outdoors is part of the fun of a glamping holiday. Many of our glamping properties have outdoor firepits or barbecue areas, giving families the chance to make mealtimes part of the adventure.

Get the children involved with simple treats such as grilled pizza bites, foil-wrapped dinners or baked apples. It's an easy way to enjoy a meal together and create memories around the fire.

Grilled pizza bites

Ingredients:

  • English muffins
  • Pizza sauce
  • Grated cheese
  • Your favourite pizza toppings

Method:

Halve the muffins, spread with pizza sauce and add cheese and toppings. Wrap in foil or cook on a suitable grill until the cheese is melted and golden.

Foil Dinners

Ingredients:

  • Butter
  • Chicken or other suitable meat
  • Diced vegetables
  • Seasoning

Method:

Place the ingredients onto a large sheet of foil, season and fold into a sealed parcel. Double-wrap and cook in hot coals until the meat is thoroughly cooked and the vegetables are tender.

Baked campfire apples

Ingredients:

  • Green apples
  • Butter
  • Brown sugar
  • Raisins
  • Walnuts or other dried fruit

Method:

Core the apples while leaving the base intact. Fill with the remaining ingredients, wrap securely in foil and cook in the hot coals until soft.

Free kid’s glamping activities

Some Glamping Hideaways properties have books, games, toys and outdoor equipment for families to enjoy during their stay. Availability varies between properties, but you may find everything from children's books and family games to footballs and frisbees.

Books and Games

Make the most of slower evenings with a family game or a good book. Some glamping sites offer children's books, young adult fiction, board games and local guides for guests to enjoy. You can also pack your family's favourite books and games from home, making it easy to enjoy a cosy night in after a day of outdoor adventures.

Outdoor Fun

Get everyone outside with outdoor games and activities. Some properties may provide equipment such as footballs and frisbees, or you can bring your own from home. Pack your favourite outdoor games and make the most of the fresh air, with plenty of space for children to run, play and explore.

Pond dipping

Pond dipping is a great way for kids to have fun whilst learning. Your kids will be fascinated by the number of different wild life creatures living together underwater.

Pond dipping is one of those things that everyone can do and enjoy. There are no particular skills involved, yet everyone has a hidden explorer in them. You can do it all year round, as the shapes of some of the specimens will change as they age. This means that you can have different experiences in the same pond at different times of year. If you do pond dipping in summer, you’re likely to see bigger animals, and more of them.

What you need

You don’t need much for pond dipping. There are only a few key things that you can’t do without and they are available at the Kittisford Barton Lantern & Larks’ honesty shop.

  • Bucket
  • Fishing net
  • Magnifying glass
  • Notebook and Pen

Choose a safe spot beside a pond and gently sweep the net through the water and sediment. Tip the contents carefully into your bucket and see what you've discovered. Take a closer look with a magnifying glass before returning everything safely to the pond.

Pond Dipping Safety

Pond dipping should always be supervised by an adult. Keep children away from the water's edge, never allow them into the pond and please encourage them not to handle the creatures. Always remember to wash hands thoroughly after this activity.
